Dartex Digest

Summer 2016

It has been an exciting quarter for Dartex as we have been out in the industry sharing the results of our recent technical research. With microclimate the hot topic of conversation we were delighted that our poster outlining the impact of fabric choice on microclimate for seating applications won best poster at the Posture and Mobility Group Conference in July.

More congratulations are in order for one of our production team, who has recently celebrated his 25 year anniversary with Dartex.

Until the next Edition…

Out and about in the industry

European Seating Symposium (ESS) Conference, 13-15 June, Dublin

Technical Director Richard Haxby was well received during his microclimate workshop at this year’s conference, with around 50 clinicians in attendance. The packed programme included a day of pressure ulcer discussions.

Ask Dr. Dartex

Every edition our very own Dr. Dartex takes a few minutes out of his day to answer your questions. This edition we are talking seating…

Q: Why should Polyurethane coated fabric (PU) be the first choice of material for our chairs?

A: PU-coated fabrics are a great choice for seating products due to their pressure redistribution properties. Dartex fabrics are breathable, durable, stretchy and water resistant to name a few, which make them ideal for any application where skin meets fabric.
Many manufacturers overlook the importance of the correct fabric on a medical chair. If a patient has been in a supportive bed all night but is seated in a vinyl or PVC-covered chair all day, the hard work if pressure ulcer prevention can easily be undone.

Spotlight on: Microclimate

Dartex has been focusing this quarter on managing moisture when seated.

What is microclimate?
The term ‘microclimate’ when discussing pressure ulcers usually refers to skin surface or tissue temperature, as well as humidity or skin surface moisture at the body–support surface interface.

Dartex MicroClimate fabric
In response to customer requests for a more breathable fabric that would help to manage the skin’s microclimate, Dartex developed its own MicroClimate range of fabrics for this specific purpose.

Tried and Tested
Our recent scientific paper shows that by choosing a fabric with a high moisture vapour permeability rate (MVP), temperature and humidity rise more slowly over time, which keeps the person feeling cooler and drier for longer.
